COLLECTIONS

THE ORIGINS OF THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTION CAN BE TRACED BACK TO WHEN THE RIGA LATVIAN SOCIETY STARTED COMPILING THE DOCUMENTARY HERITAGE OF LATVIA. HOWEVER, IT IS CONSIDERED THAT THE COLLECTION WAS OFFICIALLY FOUNDED IN 1925 WHEN TEACHER JĀNIS GRESTE BEGAN SYSTEMATICALLY COLLECTING EVIDENCE ON LITERATURE AND MUSIC. THE MUSEUM’S COLLECTION HAS GROWN INTO A CULTURAL HERITAGE SITE OF NATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE ON THE HISTORY OF LATVIAN LITERATURE, THEATRE AND MUSIC. THE MAJOR BRANCHES ARE COMPLEMENTED BY SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL HISTORY HOLDINGS FROM THE ART SECTOR AND OTHER SECTORS THAT ARE CONNECTED TO THE MAJOR BRANCHES OF THE MUSEUM.
